The aim of my graduate research project is to identify the gene(s) controlling the production of p-hydroxybenzoate monolignol transferases. These are responsible for generating unique ester groups on the periphery of lignin S-units found in poplar, palms and willow, although my research will be focused on poplar. Mis-regulation of this gene could ultimately allow the production of lignin which is easier to process industrially.
